Coeliac disease and gluten sensitivities affect about 10% of people worldwide.
GluteGuard is an Australian-developed dietary supplement designed to help protect individuals with medically diagnosed gluten sensitivities and coeliac disease from the symptoms of accidental gluten ingestion.
Manufactured by Glutagen, each tablet contains 300 mg of Carica papaya fruit oleoresin dry, supplying the active enzyme Caricain. Unlike ordinary dietary proteins, gluten resists complete human digestion, leaving behind stubborn peptides that trigger severe gastrointestinal discomfort and immune responses in sensitive people.
GluteGuard aims to manage cross-contamination risks through a targeted delivery system. A specialized enteric coating shields the Caricain enzyme from harsh stomach acidity, releasing it precisely inside the small intestine. Once active, the enzyme breaks down rogue gluten peptides into smaller, harmless fragments before they can interact with the intestinal lining. This offers an extra layer of reassurance when dining out, traveling, or attending events where full control over food preparation is difficult.
However, health authorities and organizations like Coeliac Australia emphasize that GluteGuard is strictly an adjunct product. It is not a cure or a replacement for a lifelong, strict gluten-free diet. Adults should take one whole tablet up to 15 min before a meal, up to a maximum of four tablets daily. It is unsuitable for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or anyone allergic to papaya or natural rubber latex. By offering proactive defence against hidden gluten traces, GluteGuard helps individuals navigate everyday food environments with greater confidence.
