Diphtheia

Recent news reports have stated that diphtheria is becoming prevalent in Australia again, especially in northern Queensland.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It primarily affects the nose and throat, triggering severe breathing difficulties, heart damage, and nerve issues. Thanks to widespread vaccination, it is rare, but outbreaks can still occur in under-immunized populations.

The bacteria spread easily from person to person through airborne respiratory droplets, such as those produced when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. It can also be transmitted via direct contact with unhealed skin sores or ulcers.

Symptoms generally manifest two to five days after exposure and often include:

A severe sore throat, fever, and chills, swollen and painful glands in the neck and a thick, greyish-white membrane covering the back of the throat or tonsils, which can block airways

Medical intervention involves the rapid administration of antibiotics to kill the bacteria and an antitoxin to neutralize the potent toxins released into the body. Left untreated, complications can be fatal.

The most effective method to stop diphtheria is vaccination, which is typically administered during childhood combined with tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines. Adults are also advised to receive a booster shot every ten years. If you suspect you or your family has been exposed to the disease or needs an immunization update, seek advice from your local healthcare provider.

So, until next time keep well, come in and have a chat. Your good health could depend on it.
